Brian O’Connor writes – The 75th birthday of saxophonist Stan Sulzmann was marked at the Watermill Jazz Club, Dorking, Surrey in November with a gig by his Neon Orchestra.

The 19-piece big band, with special guest Nikki Iles on accordion and piano, featured Nick Smart (conductor); Henry Lowther, Tom Walsh, George Hogg, Robbie Robson (t); Ollie Martin, Trevor Mires, Harry Maund, Sarah Williams (tb); Pete Hunt, Tom Barford, Martin Hathaway, Matt Sulzmann, James Allsopp (s); Will Barry (p); Jonny Mansfield (vib); Alex Monk (elg); Dave Whitford (b); and Finn Genockey (d).

This was the second of two birthday gigs, the first being the evening before at Ronnie Scott’s. It was a rousing finale to 2023 at Watermill Jazz, and a very fitting celebration of Stan’s career. Long may he continue.
