Improvisation and discovery

Improvisation – a destination arrived at by many musicians via different routes and by different modes of transport, musicians arriving via jazz, classical, folk, African, Asian and many other ethnic and popular musics – in fact from everywhere in the musical world.

The arriving experience – from “We are about to begin our descent” to emerging into the Arrivals Hall – is itself going to be a process of assimilation, investigation, absorption and comprehension.

Having arrived at our destination, we find so many options it’s quite bewildering – we’ll probably follow our instincts, influenced by experiences, ambiences and basic desires.

But how wonderful it can be to discover and explore a new world … welcome to improvisation.
