Paulsberg is part of the growing armies of impressive female saxophonists and of adventurous Norwegian musicians playing jazz/jazz-inspired music. After eight years, she felt Concept needed to push their boundaries, so invited Broo, a generation older. This session encompasses pastoral impressionism, free jazz/improv and South African township music, strongly recalling the Chris McGregor Group, including on Fiske’s “Serianna”, the only piece not by Paulsberg. She never hogs the spotlight. (Actually, I’d have liked her to do so a little more as there are a couple of solos that end when they are developing really interestingly.) Fiske supplies an unfailing foundation.
