JJ 05/63: Shake Keane – Bossa Negra

Sixty years ago, Mike Shera welcomed this London bossa nova EP (lately priced at over £100) but wished there were more flugelhorn playing. First published in Jazz Journal May 1963

1198

This is a highly successful British b.n. session. Shake Keane and his group have succeeded superbly in capturing the gentle melodic qualities of the music, and good jazz solos are featured. Keane also shows himself to be a composer of more than average ability, on “Negra” and “Sunday”. There is not quite as much of his superb flugel horn playing as I would like, but this should not deter anyone from obtaining this delightful record.
