“Jazz” that doesn’t swing

225

I am 96, with arthritic fingers which prevent me using any keyboard (very frustrating after 40 years in Fleet Street). Hence this scrawl for which I apologise. I am also a technorefusenik which means that I shall be unable to follow JJ online. I have no doubt the change is necessary, but it saddens me that as loyal reader that I shall miss a magazine which has entertained, educated and guided me for 50-60 years.

I have always defined jazz by the old mantra “It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing”. Some contemporary “jazz” doesn’t swing at all and clearly is not intended to. So shouldn’t someone coin a new name? After all, we know what bop is.
