The meditative strain of this recital cancels out every other quality, at least for this listener, and while that shouldn’t generally be a bad thing, in this case there’s little fresh thinking involved and equally little beyond the funereal tempos, especially as for some reason they seem to provoke a uniformity of interpretation.
Every trace of the blues is drained from “Beale Street Blues” and while the pathos of Bill Evans’s “The Two Lonely People” doesn’t drown in an ocean of politeness, so much of the music does, and close, undivided attention to what little is happening yields scant reward.
