Mike Spinrad with Guido Fazio: Horns

2225

There’s 17 years between Spinrad’s first album as leader (the trio session It’s Morning) and this, his second.

Given the quality of his compositions, enhanced by Fazio’s horn arrangements, and the playing they inspire (the “others” on some tracks include Larry Stewart on baritone and bassists Eric Lyons, John Hettel, Daniel Parenti and David Enos) it’s difficult to fathom the delay, except he has been busy as a sideman in various jazz and pop bands.

Classic West Coast cool, laid-back soul-jazz, bustling Latino and impeccable swingers and ballads, with gorgeous playing all round, add up to 43 minutes of pleasure.
