JJ 08/64: Cyril Davies And His Rhythm And Blues All Stars – The Sound Of Cyril Davies

Sixty years ago Gina Wright thought this EP, not representing Davies' best blues harp work, was aimed more at the pop than jazz market. First published in Jazz Journal August 1964

The late Cyril Davies was one of the leading bluesmen in this country, but it was only shortly before his death that he started to obtain the recognition he deserved. He had a sincere love of the music and reflected his feelings in his excellent harmonica playing, an instrument on which he truly excelled.

Not possessing a great voice, it is a pity that three of these tracks are principally vocals, aimed presumably towards the pop market. However, there is a fair helping of exciting instrumental blues playing, particularly on Country Line Special – an original tune, released as a single. This is easily the best track, for it also displays some swinging piano work from Nicky Hopkins.

Cyril’s repertoire consisted of many less commercially minded numbers than displayed here, and if this is to be the last of his recorded work it is a pity better material wasn’t available. Nevertheless I am sure his many fans will want this EP if only to serve as a remembrance of a dedicated man.
