JJ 11/84: Generation Band – Call Of The Wild

Many will know 50-year-old Victor Feldman from his stints with such artists as Cannonball Adderley and Peggy Lee. In recent times he has done much session work and this record finds him with a distinguished line up of Californian musicians and some excellent material.

Robben Ford has long been a renowned name among guitar aficionados, his style a sweet and hot blend of BB King type blues lines and jazz phrasing, and pretty much out of the same bag as Larry Carlton. On this record he is given plenty of space to stretch out and burn in uncluttered arrangements. Ford is 33 and paid his blues dues with Jimmy Witherspoon from 1972-73.

Tom Scott is another familiar name, and he still seems to be developing at age 36. His sound seems less harsh than on earlier recordings and many saxophone enthusiasts will be fascinated by his remarkably convincing Sanborn imitation on Chasin’.

This is in essence high-quality West Coast funk with plenty of solos, and will not need recommending to those who are familiar with Ford and Scott. Those who don’t know them but like ostensibly non-commercial funk music with plenty of solos are advised to sample.
