Flamenco Passion: A Tribute To Paco De Lucia

Danish guitarists, percussionists, fiddler and harmonicist latch on to the passion of flamenco, a sound still exotic for northern climes

That Scandinavia should be home to a flamenco-fusion movement might at first thought seem odd, but the reality surely reflects the way in which skilled musicians of one style can and do associate with those of another. Nominal leaders of Flamenco Passion are guitarist Poul Jacek Knudsen and bassist Nicolai Land and percussionist Anders Pedersen. Joining forces with them on this occasion are three internationally-respected masters: guitarist Mikkel Nordsø, violinist Bjarke Falgren and harmonica player Mathias Heise.

As is apparent from the album’s title, the intention is to reflect upon the astonishingly gifted master guitarist Paco de Lucia. That all these award-winning musicians are exceptionally skilful exponents of their respective instruments ensures not only solos of the very highest standard but also backing and supporting playing of a consistently high order.

Throughout, there is a constant reflection of the fire and excitement that was forever an integral aspect of Paco de Lucia’s playing, qualities that led him to become a master of many forms from original flamenco through its updating and absorbing of many forms, notably jazz. As might be expected, the musical moods touched upon here move through reflective and exuberant and there is always the underlying fiery urgency that marked de Lucia’s playing. Much to admire and enjoy for lovers of many musical genres.
