Noe Tavelli & The Argonauts: Inner Streams

Swiss drummer leads a skilful young European quintet in a set of swinging, New York flavoured post-bop originals

1186

Drummer Tavelli has rubbed shoulders with the likes of Dave Liebman but for Inner Streams he assembled a group of talented Europeans to take on a lesser task than the original fabled Argonauts.

This is music taking its inspiration from across the Atlantic; this manifests itself more obviously as the CD progresses, culminating in the final track, W 82nd Street. The horn players display some obvious influences but make a telling impact on each tune, the tenor of Geminiani a mobile complement to the brightly clear trumpet or flugelhorn playing of Spillman.

The rhythm section is highly efficient (that’s not damning with faint praise) in the way they deal with the differing styles, whether it be the early Blue Note inspired They Said There Is No Joy or the slightly old-fashioned feeling Back At It.

Fresh Sound should be continually encouraged to carry on this New Talent series.
