JJ 05/76: Lonnie Liston-Smith – Visions Of A New World

Liston-Smith's mid-70s records have become articles of faith for acid-jazzers, but 50 years ago, Roger Dean didn't get as far as musicological analysis of his latest, deeming it 'extremely monotonous'. First published in Jazz Journal May 1976

This LP, directed to ‘all the beautiful people’ is mere impersonal background music. It is quite well played, but the arrangements and rhythm section sound extremely monotonous, and some of the vocals (singer happily not specified) are grotesque. I can’t muster the strength to say more: and it wouldn’t help.
