JJ 08/95: Dick Morrissey – Love Dance

Thirty years ago David Lands heard ailing tenor master Dick Morrissey in the autumn of his years but with his musical powers as strong as his 1960s-80s best. First published in Jazz Journal August 1995

This live recording made at the Children In Need Jazzathon organised by Kentish promoter/pianist Chris Howes in 1989 is sadly the latest example of Dick Morrissey’s work. As many readers know, Dick is suffering from cancer and proceeds from the sale of this cassette make a contribution to the D M Benefit.

The tenorman is in good form here and from the opening bars of Too Close For Comfort you immediately know you’re in for a swinging modernist’s delight. Burch digs in and quarries some arresting space for himself, notable on Falling In Love where his brooding statement warrants the extended choruses. Morrissey is in his element and his forthright tone more than suggests his anxiousness to get stuck in and blow.

Derek Nash joins the band for Tenor Madness and the pair of saxophonists play to the crowd and for the enjoyment of everyone present. Archer and Hall are their reliable selves, providing rock solid support, but the day belongs to Morrissey and is a fine reminder of his quality and creativity. As I’ve said before, some of the finest modern mainstream jazz is to be found on our own doorstep.

This is a cassette-only limited issue and can be purchased mail-order from Up Beat Promotions, 40 Stafford Road, Sidcup, Kent, DAM 6PU for £7.80 inclusive.
