Febrer, Mathilde: Milou en mai, hommage à Stéphane Grappelli

They say : A tribute to the French master of jazz violin is no easy task… but who better than Mathilde Febrer to accomplish it? She trained as a classical violinist but turned her bow to jazz a long time ago. She’s accompanied a variety of artists, from Daniel Colin and Alexandre Lagoya to Led Zeppelin and Charles Aznavour, including Claude Bolling, Renaud, Henri Salvador, Rodolphe Raffalli and Sanseverino. And now, finally, we have her first album under her own name, produced for the label Respect Record by Kenichi Takahashi, a Japanese legend who loves France and its music. The peerless grace of this violinist derives additional energy from the skilled assembly of musicians who accompany her, all of them among the best jazz instrumentalists in France. The result has an unrivalled swing in music that is timeless. Augustin BONDOUX – Patrick FRÉMEAUX (Frémeaux & Associés, FA8613)

Fite, Niklas & Christmann, Günter: Insisting

They say : Hardcore improvisers meet across generations for a granular explosion. Christmann hails back to the origins of European improvised music, Fite was a student of British guitarist, John Russell. Christmann plays cello with intensity and grace, Fite brings a punchy dynamism that reminds us that the guitar is a percussion instrument. (Corbett vs. Dempsey CvsDCD111)

Foley, Zack: Silent Boomer X

They say : Joined by bassist Frank Wagner and drummer C.J. Everett, adventurous vocalist Zack Foley turns his attention to standards in an economical chord-less trio configuration on his third outing as a leader, Silent Boomer X, available from Jazzheads. On Silent Boomer X, Foley goes all-in on standard repertoire but in a non-standard way, departing from the conventional “crooner” sound and letting his tenor voice play a role traditionally filled by the saxophone. In that vein, Zack aspires to link the improvising vocal lineage of Betty Carter, Chet Baker and Sheila Jordan, with the refined lyricism of saxophonists Don Byas and Lester Young. Delivering one exemplary scat solo after another on Silent Boomer X, Foley takes up that mantle, proving himself a poised improviser with excellent time and taste. (Jazzheads)
