Cool Joe Henderson

I enjoyed Brian Morton’s Alt. takes (JJ 1218) and particularly his notes on Joe Henderson (tho’ I’d read a seed catalogue if Brian’s name were the byline).

I interviewed Henderson at his hotel when he was over promoting Lush Life. It was released by Verve when Richard Cook was running things in the UK I think. Henderson was genuinely perplexed about the excitement it had generated. He thought the record was no different, better or worse, than anything he’d ever done.

Brian’s memory of Hank Jones “minimalism” also chimed with me. I saw him at Brecon solo. Outside everything was a cacophonous, drunken melée; in the room with Mr Jones a timeless peace reigned.
