Onyx Brass: Onyx Noir – Jazz Works for Brass Quintet

1910

This is a new release that falls into the increasingly familiar category of “Is this jazz?”, when reviewed in a jazz magazine.

It’s a fine set of compositions by an eminent cast of British jazz musicians, and beautifully played by Onyx Brass, but it’s important to explain that although the music is composed by jazz musicians, it’s performed here by classical musicians, so to most jazz listeners it’s unlikely to sound like jazz.

It’s not difficult to imagine this being ideal music for concerts in churches, cathedrals, and concert halls, but we’re unlikely to hear it in a jazz club.
