Gabrielle Ducomble: Across the Bridge

2003

After two albums (2011 and 2014) where Ducomble interpreted an enjoyable selection of standards, this is her first release containing only her own compositions. The 12 songs take the listener on a personal tour of causes that are clearly important to the singer – and her vocal is rather enchanting, with its pure, earnest, open sound – but actual jazz content is thin on the ground. The opening track, “Forest Boy”, for instance, is more a gentle folk ballad in both its lyrical and melodic style. The listener will stumble across some clean, richly musical scat, however, in third track “Ride”.
