New releases April-May 2026, P-R

Records offered for review to Jazz Journal in March-April 2026, including John Pachnos, Peter Furlan, Phoenix Trio, Raimonds Pauls and Ron Reider // Editor's pick: Peter Furlan

Pachnos, John: John Pachnos

They say : Debut album by 25-year-old bassist/composer John Pachnos shows the New Jersey native’s strong personal vision through wide-ranging original compositions & his heady interaction with musicians he has played with since college (or earlier). Among the unusual sounds Pachnos offers is the bouzouki on lead track “Avgonyma” (named for the tiny hilltop medieval town on the island of Chios, Greece, his family’s ancestral home). (Avgonyma Music) Hear John Pachnos.

Peter Furlan Project: Live at Maureen’s Jazz Cellar

(Beany Bops 2)

Phoenix Trio, The: Tomorrow is Today

Plastic Waste Band, The: Trash Island

They say : Trash Island envisions a future where all of humanity has washed up on a floating island of plastic waste—the last inhabitable place on Earth. Drawing from the intensity of psychedelic rock and the collective spontaneity of jazz, the album moves through ecstatic, serene, and quietly absurd vignettes of post-apocalyptic life—surrealist in its lens, sharp in its emotional intelligence. The band channels ecological urgency into a restless, genre-defiant improvisation practice that stands apart. (Protomaterial Records PROTOM36 / Elastic Recordings ER 024) Hear The Plastic Waste Band.

Portal, Michel: Any Way

They say : ‘Any Way’ by Michel Portal was recorded between 1991 and 1992 across several studios in Paris and New York. The album gathers around Michel Portal an exceptional ensemble of musicians drawn from the European and American jazz scenes, resulting in a sonic journey that perfectly illustrates Portal’s freedom and instrumental versatility across clarinet, bass clarinet, alto saxophone and soprano saxophone. Reissued here as a commemorative reminder of Portal’s incredible contribution to jazz, and to mark his sad passing on the 12th of February. (Autre Distribution LBLC6544 – CD)

Pu Poo Platter: Undercurrent

They say : Formed in New York City in 2019, Pu Poo Platter is a free-flowing collective known for its distinctive fusion of organic grooves, soulful melodies, and improvisation. Their new EP, Undercurrent, captures that spirit in full: recorded live over four days at Shanghai’s Cashmere Studios, it unfolds with a pure sense of flow and spontaneity. Shaped by its intuitive interplay and thoughtful post-production, the record becomes a warm, soulful listening experience. (Cashmere Records)

Puente, Tito: Dance Mania

They say : During the 1950s, Tito Puente was at the height of his popularity and helped to bring Afro-Cuban and Caribbean sounds, like mambo, son, and chacha-cha, to mainstream audiences. Dance Mania, probably his most celebrated album, features the great Ray Barretto on congas. It was added to the National Recording Registry in 2002 and is listed among the “1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die”. (Descarga! 637011 – LP)

Circulus is a singular personal statement—music that reflects a lifetime of listening, learning, and letting go. (Orbis Music OM1426) Hear Bruno Råberg.

Raimonds, Pauls / Latvian Radio Big Band: Moments

They say : One of Maestro Raimonds Pauls’ most recent works, the instrumental music suite “Momentsi” is a tribute to the jazz musician, outstanding trumpeter and arranger Gunārs Rozenbergs. This suite reflects the sound aesthetics of the 60s, a time when Pauls actively announced himself as a pianist and composer. (Jersika Records, JRD017) Hear Pauls Raimonds.

Reid, Julian Davis: Vocation

They say : The heart of “Vocation” beats with the expressive piano work of Julian, the soaring alto saxophone of Lenard Simpson, deeply felt vocals from soprano Tramaine Parker, resonant bass lines by Micah Collier, and the inventive rhythms of James Russell Sims on drums. Rogers, Yvonne: The Button Jar

They say : Pianist/composer Yvonne Rogers draws inspiration from her magical childhood in rural Maine for her mesmerizing new solo album. The pieces on the album started as vignettes about her childhood in rural Maine which she posted on social media. Pyroclastic Records founder Kris Davis was so taken with what she heard that she convinced Rogers to develop the pieces into this thoughtful and moving solo piano record. (Pyroclastic Records)

Roig, Kemuel: Both Sides Now

They say : Pianist Kemuel Roig’s solo album Both Sides Now is filled with his own brand of beautiful music. The pianist’s thoughtful ruminations, caressing of some of his favorite melodies, and subtle creativity blend together his Cuban heritage and classical training with his quietly joyful and inventive jazz interpretations. (Life in Music, LIM202605)
