Ellen Edwards: A New York Session

2443

Based in Atlanta, Georgia, Ellen Edwards has sung professionally for two decades. She has also been a student of Suzy Bogguss, a factor that is perhaps reflected in the storytelling aspect of the songs heard here, all of which are composed, words and music, by Edwards. It was through Bogguss that Edwards went to New York City to record this EP and she is backed by a group especially assembled for the occasion by Jason Miles.

Edwards has a pleasing vocal sound, rich and mature. The music is melodic and the lyrics of these songs are intelligent, of the day, and positive. Her accompanists are very good and there are brief solos from Jason Miles, Robbie Kondor and Jeff Mironov, while Randy Brecker guests on one track.

Although she has recorded CDs before, Ellen Edwards is a new name to me and I will seek out those earlier albums. A booklet with the lyrics of all five songs accompanies this EP.
