Trio JDM: Fast Corners

Organ, guitar and drums trio from the north of England does a good job in the style of Jimmy Smith and others

This organ trio is made up of three highly respected musicians based in the north of England. On the face of it, the title of the group suggests that this is a co-operative but guitarist Jamie Taylor is quick to state that drummer Dave Walsh is the man at the helm.

Despite comments elsewhere suggesting that this new trio delve into the areas inhabited by the likes of Medeski, Martin and Wood, the sounds we get from Fast Corners are more or less straight out of the “organized” tradition.

The threesome are a well-knit unit performing originals supplied by Taylor and Longhawn, also taking in Charlie Parker’s Ah-Leu-Cha and Peter Bernstein’s Little Green Men. The new themes are melodic enough, if not particularly memorable but in all cases give the group plenty of kick off points for some good solos – not to mention a basis for collective interaction.

If you are into Jimmy Smith et al, consider buying this CD and catching the group at a venue near you.
