James Francies: Flight

2774

The press release and minimal CD sleeve don’t provide much vital information. Amongst other pianistic and keyboard influences, the effect of the leader hearing Joe Sample at the age of six can be heard, particularly in the opener “Leaps”.

The remarkable Chris Potter arrives like a whirlwind on “Reciprocal” and “Crib”, and Francies responds appropriately. “My Day Will Come” features a great guest vocal by Yebba, but the vocalist on other tracks including an adventurous take on “Ain’t Nobody” isn’t credited. A frantic listening experience, trying too hard to cover all bases, but that’s not unusual for a debut album.
