Preview: Chasing Trane at Ronnie's

Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary gets a special preview screening at Ronnie Scott's on 25 July, with a Q&A session hosted by Richard Havers

It's 50 years since the death of John Coltrane, a legendary jazz musician who continues to influence the world of jazz to this day. Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary is a new movie that tells Coltrane's story through a combination of film footage, interviews with friends, fellow musicians and fans and, of course, recordings of Coltrane from throughout his career.

Ronnie Scott's will host the UK premiere of the movie with a special screening on Tuesday 25 July at 1.00pm. The film is written and directed by John Scheinfeld, whose previous work includes Who Is Harry Nilsson...? and The U.S. v. John Lennon. Scheinfeld has created the film with the full co-operation of the Coltrane family and with the support of the record labels which currently own Coltrane's recordings.

The documentary includes previously unseen footage, including Coltrane family home movies and newly discovered film of Coltrane in the studio. Famous fans such as Bill Clinton, Kamasi Washington, Carlos Santana and Wynton Marsalis add their contributions and Denzel Washington reads extracts from Coltrane's interviews. Coltrane's own music forms the soundtrack.

The screening at Ronnie Scott's will be followed by a Q&A with author and journalist Richard Havers. The official trailer for the movie can be seen here.

The screening begins at 1.00pm on Tuesday 25 July (doors open at 12.30). Tickets can be reserved at the Ronnie Scott's Club website or on 020 7439 0747.

The Scott's screening precedes the formal release of the film in August, when it will run in the UK at the ICA, London, 11-17 August. The ICA website has a different trailer.
