Preview: Swanage Jazz Festival

Jazz returns to Swanage this July, with a packed programme ranging from trad to modern, contemporary and gypsy jazz staged across the town

The Swanage Jazz Festival, revivified by guitarist Nigel Price (see Simon Spillett, JJ 0118), boasts a burgeoning lineup this summer. Over a single weekend, 13-15 July, it crams in an extensive programme of concerts and other events.

The festival starts on Friday at 2.00pm when the Steam Train Dance with Dave Brennan's Jubilee Jazz Band leaves Swanage station to travel to the venue at Harman's Cross village hall. The opening night's concert at the Mowlem Theatre features the Ronnie Scott's All Stars with The Ronnie Scott's Story - a multi-media show that inclues live jazz, narration, photos and video. Support comes from Claire Martin accompanied by Nigel Price (pictured right by John Watson). The 18-piece Echoes of Ellington Orchestra, with Claire Martin, headlines Saturday and Pete Long's Bennie Goodman at Carnegie Hall show is a Sunday highlight. Trumpeter Andy Davies will lead late-night jam sessions on Friday and Saturday at the Conservative Club.

Tom Jobim, Johnny Hepbir Trio, Dart Valley Stompers, John Hallam/Amy Roberts Quintet, Graham Smith's Allsorts Quintet, Alison Rayner Quintet (ARQ), Mark Crooks/Colin Oxley Quartet, Terry Quinney’s Sound Of Blue Note, Keith Nichols' Blue Devils, Jazz Jamaica, Fletch’s Brew, Andrew McCormack/Jason Yarde Duo, Spats Langham, Vitality Five, Sara Dowling Quartet, Paulus Shafer Trio, Old Hat Jazz Band, Julian Phillips, Dave Moorwood's Rascals of Rhythm Jazz Band, Dorset Youth Jazz Orchestra, Dave Brennan's Jubilee Jazz Band, Anthony Kerr Quartet, Sarah Bolter and the Julian Siegel Quartet.
