John McLaughlin book gets kickstart

Author Colin Harper has opened up a Kickstarter campaign to fund publication of Echoes From Then, a limited-edition book about guitarist John McLaughlin

In 2014 Colin Harper published Bathed In Lightning: John McLaughlin, The 60s And The Emerald Beyond (Jawbone). He has now written a companion book, Echoes From Then: Glimpses Of John McLaughlin 1959-75 and is seeking funding via Kickstarter to publish a limited edition of just 200 copies of this new work about the influential British guitarist (pictured right, on the cover of the book, with drummer Tony Williams).

According to Harper, who's written for Mojo, Q, The Irish Times and The Guardian and whose previous books include Dazzling Stranger: Bert Jansch And The British Folk And Blues Revival (Bloomsbury, 2000), the new McLaughlin volume features "160,000 freshly burnished words and masses of new visual content, from unpublished photos to period press ads."

Those freshly burnished words include what might be McLaughlin's first interview (from a 1963 issue of the Wandsworth Advertiser when McLaughlin was in Georgie Fame's Blue Flames), three interviews with McLaughlin collaborator Duffy Power, five pieces about McLaughlin and Lifetime written in 1975 by Richard Williams, revised and enlarged appendices on some of McLaughlin's recordings and concerts and much more.

Harper is seeking £1,000 through Kickstarter to fund the final stages of production. Any amount can be pledged: a pledge of £15 or more will secure a signed copy of the book and there are more offers on Harper's Kickstarter page.

The project will only be funded if it achieves its £1,000 goal by 16 August 2017.

For more information and to pledge please go to Harper's Echoes From Then Kickstarter page.
