Preview: LJF at The Other Palace

JGBG Events will present a host of jazz artists in concerts at The Other Palace in Victoria, as part of this year's EFG London Jazz Festival

In a packed programme that runs throughout the 2018 EFG London Jazz Festival – from Friday 16 to Sunday 25 November – promoters JGBG Events will present some of Britain’s finest mainstream jazz performers in combos ranging from duos to big bands.

JBGB Events (jbgbevents.com), led by John Billett, are producers, promoters and presenters of jazz, popular and classical live music events in London and the southeast of England.

JBGB's 2018 LJF concerts will take place in The Other Palace, just round the corner from the slightly larger Buckingham Palace, with two exceptions – a concert by Liane Carroll and Claire Martin, and the closing night's event starring Joe Stilgoe & His Mighty Big Band (pictured right) playing classics from Cole Porter and Louis Prima as well as Stilgoe’s own numbers, will be at St John’s Smith Square.

The Down For The Count Swing Orchestra open proceedings with their Big Band Bash, featuring the music of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman. The third big band concert comes from the Gareth Lockrane Big Band, a 19-piece orchestra playing Lockrane’s own compositions on the afternoon of 24 November.

At the other end of the ensemble scale Alan Barnes will play a duo set with US pianist Phil DeGreg, who will be making his LJF debut, while Liane Carroll and Claire Martin (pictured below left) will appear together with guest trumpeter Martin Shaw. There will be other opportunities to hear the music of jazz legends, with Chris Ingham’s Rebop performing music from Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley, while New Orleans – The Early Years, from DixieMix, features the work of King Oliver and Jelly Roll Morton among others.

There’s also contemporary jazz from the Dave O’Higgins Quartet and the Freddie Gavita Quartet. What might be the programme’s most intriguing concert takes place on the afternoon of Saturday 17 November. Titled 2 Pianos, 6 Pianists, 12 Hands & 60 Digits, this show stars six leading pianists performing solo, in duos and in a sextet. Nikki Iles, David Newton, Jason Rebello, James Pearson, Jim Watson and Gareth Williams are set to take part in this event.
